About Winston C. Mathis

Picture of Winston C. Mathis This picture sucks. But then again I am a bit too busy than to do anything other than strike a quick pose. In other words, I stopped working to take this shot. What you see is what you get. I consider myself a blue collar lawyer. I am not elitist, nor do I attempt to impress my client with words they don't understand. My philosophy is that the client has to be involved in the decision making process. I control tactics in the Courtroom, my client decides if the Courtroom is where we need to be.

I really like to recall my first day as an attorney. I think it is something to be proud of. I argued jury instructions in a meth case in front of the Judge that had sworn me in that very day. Not many new attorneys find themselves in that situation. However, I come from a family of Attorneys. My father practiced 49 years in Arkadelphia, Arkansas before he died on January 2, 1997. It was very cold that year.

My sister practices Medical Malpractice in Missouri and Arkansas. Her web site is www.sherrydejanes.com. She is very good at those cases. Med Mal is very complicated, especially since the Health Providers practically subsidize the Arkansas State Legislature. In any event, it should come as no surprise that they have tons of laws to protect them. You can depend on Sherry Dejanes to meet your needs. She impresses me with her work ethic. And I know how to work.

My brother, Travis Mathis Jr., practiced here in Arkansas for fourteen years. He stayed until the Tornado hit the office in 1997. He decided to move after that. I don't blame him. He is now a traveling nurse who has a valid Arkansas Law License. Nice combination I must say. Time will tell, I still can't help but think he is a nurse because he likes the uniforms.

I have been an attorney since August 25, 1997. Long before I became an attorney I was doing my father's research, drafting his dictation, and helping with his legal arguments. His name was William Travis Mathis. He went by Travis and was involved in local politics upon his return from World War II. He had fought in the Battle of the Bulge and after surviving that, he just wasn't intimidated by much. That is another story.

I handle a large number of criminal cases, divorce, and child custody cases. I advise corporations and I handle personal injury cases. I have recovered 1.5 million in a single case. That day rocked. I also have received hung juries back to back in two consecutive felony trials over a three day period. In the second trial, it was a rape, the client had to read a confession from another county's case that dealt with the same alleged victims he was on trial for in my case. That was a fine week. In a relatively short amount of time those defendants went home and continued with their lives. The penalty for rape in Arkansas is 10 to 40 yeas to life. It's not bragging if it is a fact. I don't brag. For instance, I will tell you not to hire any attorney that will guarantee a specific result, good or bad. That is not to say that an attorney can't look at the facts, and based upon experience give you some likely outcomes. While it is crucial to keep a good attitude, you have to see the hazards in every case and aggressively seek to neutralize them. If I sound like the kind of attorney you need, then contact me.
